The L’Oreal Colour Riche LeGloss in Saucy Mauve

Hey everyone!!

Its been a while since I last posted something on the blog! I have been busy travelling, attending weddings and getting dental issues sorted out! I am not much of a lip gloss person, partly since all the ones I have tried till date feel sticky and generally failed to impress me. Also, on a regular basis I stick to just plain old lipstick and so I am surprised that a humble drug store lip gloss managed to get me interested in lipglosses again. I picked up the Loreal LeGloss in saucy mauve on a whim when I saw it marked down at my local target and I am glad I did ๐Ÿ™‚

LeGloss in Saucy Mauve

LeGloss in Saucy Mauve

  • This lip gloss managed to overcome one of my pet peeves about lipglosses..the sticky factor! Surprisingly, I did not find it gooey or sticky on my lips. It does have a thick texture when it comes out of the tube, but that doesn’t translate to goop on the lips.
  • I have not used this on its own so much since the color ,although it looks bright in the tube comes off very muted on the lips. I like to use this more as a top coat for my lipstick where it adds some shine and gloss to the ย lipstick color on your lips.
  • At the time of purchasing the gloss I had no idea about the ingredients since its not listed on the tube. But when researching the ingredients for this post I was happy to see that this lipgloss has vitamin E and even Argan oil listed among the ingredients. That probably explains why I didn’t find this gloss to be drying when I wore it on its own a couple of ย times! A non drying, non sticky lipgloss sounds good doesn’t it?! ๐Ÿ™‚
The applicator

The applicator

  • I usually like to have a doe foot applicator for lipglosses but this Lancome juicy tube kind of applicator didn’t bother me too much. You just need to be careful about the amount of pressure you apply just in case a whole lot of the stuff comes charging out!!
  • Now, I have to warn you that this lipgloss has a sweet sugary caramel kind of smell which you will either love or hate compeletely! ๐Ÿ˜€ The smell wears off pretty soon after application but it is quite strong when you first apply.
  • The staying power of this lipgloss is average in my opinion but then again I have yet to find a lipgloss that stays fresh for more than 3 hours when eating and drinking are involved. I do find some of the gloss still around after eating and drinking which is a good sign I guess ๐Ÿ™‚
Swatch time!

Swatch time!

  • As you can see from the swatch above, the color is a really pretty rosy pink with tiny specs of glitter. The only downside I see with this gloss is that you need to really pack on the gloss if you want any color payoff on your lips. But it functions well as a lipstick topper, adding some extra oomph to your lips ๐Ÿ˜›

Hope you guys are having a great week so far! Until next time..ciao!!

Garnier Moisture Rescue Refreshing Gel Cream

Hey Everyone!!

Hope you guys are having a great week so far! I have been tied up with dental issues this week ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I hate going to the dentist..I see the dentists chair as a torture chamber and hate having to go for even basic cleaning! The aversion is just so strong! I had a root canal done some 7 years ago which scarred me for life! Writing a beauty related post will hopefully cheer me up and calm my nerves before the dental visit. So lets talk happy stuff now ๐Ÿ™‚ Today I thought I’ll review a summer time staple of mine..The Garnier Moisture rescue refreshing gel cream.

Garnier gel cream

Garnier gel cream

As you can see from the picture above, its a green colored light gel in a glass jar. The glass jar might be a problem when travelling but otherwise its a nice sturdy container. Unfortunately, I threw away the outer packaging which contains the list of ingredients and such.

  • The reason why this is a summer time staple of mine is because it has an incredible light feel on the skin. The gel has a nice cool feel on the skin immediately after application and it absorbs very quickly leaving no sticky residue on the skin surface. The no greasy after feel can be a real blessing when the weather conditions are hot and humid so this is my go to summer ย day time moisturizer.
  • This is also a real budget friendly moisturizer. It costs 7 to 8 dollars depending on where you shop ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I use this cream as a primer as well! ๐Ÿ™‚ I do not wear a primer on top of this cream during the day. I generally do not like to use a face primer regularly and use one only for weddings and events. This cream being a gel helps create a nice finish on the skin which helps with foundation application. It might not help so much with oil control, but being a dry skin gal I don’t have major oil issues to deal with.
  • The gel does have a slight scent but it does not bother me at all ๐Ÿ™‚ It is a very light fresh smelling scent that doesn’t linger for too long..yay to that!

IMG_1286_1

  • I do have to point out that this cream isn’t very moisturizing and does nothing for me during the winters! This cream is for normal to combo skin and since in summers my skin is less dry it works. There is a pink gel version of the same cream for dry skin but I personally did not find it any different from this one except for the gel color!
  • The cream mainly consists of water and glycerin with dimethicone added in which explains why it helps with creating a nice base for makeup application. I also have to point out that denatured alcohol is a major ingredient in this cream and therefore might not be suitable for people with extremely sensitive skin since it can further dry out or irritate sensitive skin.

Do let me know what is your favorite summer time moisturizer? I would love to explore some other light and hydrating mositurizers this summer..so suggestions are welcome ๐Ÿ™‚ Until next time..ciao!

Hey everyone!

So I finally ventured into the nail stamping arena in the world of nail art. I picked up the salon express nail stamping kit last weekend when we went out of town and I sighted a sally’s beauty supply. I have heard about how Sally’s beauty supply has all sorts brands you don’t normally see in other stores. Anyway, since I’ve been wanting to try nail stamping and was considering ordering from amazon I picked the salon express kit and tried it out this week ๐Ÿ™‚

First time nail stamping!

First time nail stamping!

I wasn’t expecting it to work out at all so I was pretty happy with the results ๐Ÿ™‚ As you can see its far from perfect (plus I have super tiny nails) but I was relieved to see that the kit worked to some extent ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a great weekend everyone!

Until next time, ciao!!

DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Review

Hey everyone!!

Having lived in south east asia for close to 7 years, oil cleansers were a big part of my daily skin care routine, primarily as a makeup remover. When I moved to the US, I was quite dismayed to see that there were barely any oil cleansers in the drugstore. After abusing my skin with harsh makeup removing wipes for a while I thought I’ll just order an oil cleanser off of Amazon and I am so glad I did. If your unaware of oil cleansers, they are a great gentle way of removing your makeup, no tugging, no rubbing..just a quick rinse off ๐Ÿ™‚ So, the oil cleanser I ordered from amazon is the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil and it cost 25$ and considering how little you need, its a pretty neat price tag ๐Ÿ™‚

The DHC deep cleansing oil

The DHC deep cleansing oil

So a quick run through about how to use this..the key is to pump the oil onto your dry hands and massage it onto your dry face. I usually do not require more than 1 pump to remove my face makeup and when I do have heavy eye makeup on, I might need one more pump. After you’ve massaged the oil onto your face (and eyelids), all you need to do is rinse it off with water and..voila! your done with the makeup removal process!

IMG_1268_1

  • As I mentioned in the beginning this is a really gentle and easy way to remove makeup. The product claims to able to remove water proof mascara easily, I cannot vouch for that since I mostly use water resistant mascaras (which are easy to remove with the oil). It is able to take off all my makeup easily including staining lip sticks ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Many people might be grossed out by the idea of putting oil on their face (especially oily skin folks). When you wash off the oil from your face this does not leave behind any greasy oil film on your face, instead your face will feel squeaky clean, so you don’t have to worry about any greasy after feel.
  • In case your wondering how exactly this thing works here is a quick take :).. your makeup is composed of oil and water dissolving components..the water soluble components can be easily removed by rinsing with water, its usually the oil soluble stuff that needs special removal. When you apply the oil onto your face, the oil soluble components get dissolved in the oil and upon contact with water form oil droplets which then gets washed away from your skin surface along with water your using for rinsing.
Ingredient List

Ingredient List

  • As you can see from the ingredient list above, the main ingredient is olive oil. If you have been looking for/using an oil cleanser for a while you will know that most of them contain mineral oil. Even the more expensive oil cleansers, like the ones from Shu Uemura contain mineral oil. So if your avoiding products with mineral oil , this is a good option.
  • The only negative that I can think about this product is that it is not travel friendly. Considering its an oily substance I would hesitate to put this in my checked luggage anyday!! So for travel purposes I still go back to makeup remover wipes.
  • I do have to point out that I do not use this in place of my daily cleanser although it says cleanser. After I use this to remove makeup, I still go ahead and use my regular facial cleanser and then moisturize. To me this is only a makeup remover ๐Ÿ™‚

Do tell me, what are your favorite oil cleansers? I’d love to hear your suggestions and views on other similar products in the market :). Have a great rest of the week!!

Until next time, ciao!!

The Rimmel Lasting finish 25 hour foundation

Hey everyone!

Welcome to an episode of ย Lilly searching for a good drug store foundation (There will be more foundation trials and tribulations ย episodes to come). I picked up the Rimmel Lasting Finish a few months back on a whim. I got the wrong shade which seems to always be an issue when I shop for a drug store foundation. However, it wasn’t so off that I couldn’t test it out ๐Ÿ™‚

Rimmel Lasting Finish foundation

Rimmel Lasting Finish foundation

  • I really enjoy the feel of this foundation. It gives a nice light to medium coverage. I think it can be built up carefully to a full coverage if you want but I have not tried since I am mostly happy with medium coverage.
  • It dries to a nice matte finish which isn’t too matte that your skin looks parched but just the right amount of matte with a hint of ย a glow. I was surprised that the matte look ย didn’t accentuate any dry patches (I do have dry skin), so I think this foundation will work great with most skin types!
  • Actually when I realized that the shade wasn’t a good match for my skin tone I was hoping this would oxidize ๐Ÿ˜› but this doesn’t! So for those of you who can find the right shade this is good news!
  • The foundation does have a weird floral smell but it disappears after you apply so I am not too bothered by it.
Swatch time!

Swatch time!

  • The biggest issue with trying to buy this foundation would be trying to figure out your shade. The transparent tube doesn’t help too much. The shade I picked up has pink undertones and gives my yellow undertone skin a greyish cast if I try to build it up to a medium coverage. It however helps cover up blemishes and also dark circles for me ๐Ÿ™‚ So recently I’ve been using this more as a corrector/concealer.
  • The shade range in general is quite limited. So if you find a shade that matches you perfectly its akin to winning the lottery ๐Ÿ™‚
  • Once you apply the foundation to your face, you have work real fast! I find that once it sets it refuses to budge and blending it out is next to impossible. Because of this I find it easier to apply it in a buffing motion with a brush or with my finger tips. I found it hard to stipple the foundation onto my face since it sets too fast!

Overall, I am impressed with what this foundation can do considering its low price point! I am not sure about the 25 hour claim since I have never worn makeup continuously for more than 12 hours ๐Ÿ™‚ This did last me a good 7 to 8 hours before it started to show signs of wearing off so I doubt it will last 25 hours. They also claim to have a build in primer which for me doesn’t make much of a difference when comparing its wear time to other foundations. I do not use a face primer everyday, so I mostly wear foundations over my moisturizer and this one with the built in primer was no different than the rest.

Hope you guys are having a great week! Until next time, ciao!!

Mink 3D printer for makeup ..why it may not work in its current form

Hey everyone!

So I am sure at least some of you read about/saw the presentation by Grace Choi at Tech Crunch Disrupt. In case you haven’t heard of whats been pretty much the latest buzz on social media take a look at ย her presentation below:

(Source: TechCrunch)

If you’ve watched this video I am sure your head is buzzing with questions ๐Ÿ™‚ When I saw this presentation I was put off by so many things that I just had to express myself somewhere! ๐Ÿ˜€

First off I don’t understand why this has garnered so much of press (I am assuming its the Harvard Business School tag)….She admits during the Q and A that its not a working proto type and she ‘hacked’ it up. Initially I thought the eyeshadow she showed up was something she created beforehand using her printer but a lot of people have pointed out that the eyeshadow is in fact a bare minerals eyeshadow! (the color is not the one she picked on screen either)

Secondly, her entire premise for the invention (women buy high end makeup for color options) is totally wrong as any cosmetics consumer can point out. I am sure a lot of you will agree that if its just color we are after we can buy those huge coastal scents eyeshadow palettes and be happy for the rest of our lives!

Third point: This is not 3D printing. I feel she is just using the term because it is the latest buzz word in the tech industry. From whatever she has revealed or should I say hypothesized about her invention, we can say its just spraying color onto a base (very much like how we print something on paper at home). An actual 3D printer should be able to ‘print’ the whole eyeshadow from scratch (base and all).

Fourth point: It irritates me that she doesn’t talk about quality at all. We women are not dumb to go give our money to high end brands if they sell us chalky poor quality makeup. A women most likely buys high end make up for the packaging, texture, staying power and ingredients. When its just the color I am after, I am sure 98% of the time the drug store can provide a more affordable alternative and I don’t need a 300$ printer. The colors which are hard to find drugstore dupes for, are those which have textural aspects to the color like a pearlescent finish for example, which this printer does not address, so this doesn’t solve any problems in my opinion.

Fifth point: She couldn’t answer any of the questions from the panel. I really wished there was a woman up there on that panel who would have asked all the right questions or even a guy who has a deeper understanding of the cosmetic industry. The panel did ask her relevant questions like how to make lipstick etc ย but did not really push for a better explanation from her.

Sixth point: Her attitude really put me off..sorry! Maybe she was nervous and I know, having done so many times myself, how nerve wracking it can be when presenting to a huge audience. But there is a fine line between getting defensive about your work and coming off as an arrogant know all above all personality. Investors like to work with people who don’t just have smart ideas but with whom they can establish long term working relationships with, so it pays to project the positive aspects of your personality.

Lastly, shopping for make up is a social and sensory ย experience for a lot of people. I am sure 13 to 21 year olds love to check out makeup with their friends and moms. I did..with my mom as a teenager and it was always a fun and pleasurable experience. The whole convenience thing (which she did not spell correctly; ย not to nitpick but come on, check your spellings woman before you make an important presentation) is not really a selling point. Sure, 13 year olds can have fun with this during a sleepover but when they hang out with their friends they will still go to a Sephora to try things out and buy them too. So this invention is not going to disrupt the cosmetics industry in anyway. Beyond being a ‘toy’ I don’t see it doing much.

To wrap up, I’ll say that the idea is really cool but I need to see a real working prototype to believe that its actually possible. Once that is established I want to see how the machine can deliver in terms of product texture and quality ๐Ÿ™‚

Until next time ciao!!

Hey everyone!!

Its friday! the best day of the week! So today’s foto friday picture is one I clicked when I was out jogging at the park nearby.
