Holika Holika Good Cera Lip Oil Stick

Hello folks! A while back I had posted about a K beauty Haul from the website Cosmetic Love (POSTED HERE). I had picked up some fun stuff to try along with a lip balm from Holika Holika. This is my first time trying a K beauty lip balm and unfortunately I wasn’t that impressed.

After all, Korean skincare is all about hydration and I expected this to give me nice hydrated juicy lips. I have dry lips almost all year round. This is mostly due to the dry weather conditions where I live ( my lips are happy when I visit my parents in tropical paradise). I no longer have the outer box of the lip balm but from the description given on the Holika Holika European site, this lip balm does not contain artificial colors, artificial flavors, mineral oil, triethanolamine, talc, petrolatum and benzophenone. It does contain, as you probably guessed, Ceramides! Ceramides are a fantastic skincare ingredient.. I have done a whole blog post on it (HERE). This was the reason why I picked this lip balm out of a bazillion ones I saw on the Cosmetic Love website. So I was a bit bummed when it turned out to be like any other regular lip balm. Maybe I put too much pressure on the poor lip balm what with fancy ceramide plastered on his ingredient list! Here is a full ingredient list below:

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Diisostearyl Malate, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Octyldodecanol, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Microcrystalline Wax, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ceresin, Meadowfoam Delta-Lactone, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Ozokerite, Paraffin, Jojoba Esters, Polyethylene, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Tribehenin, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Trihydroxystearin, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot)fruit Oil, Camellia Sinensis Seed Oil, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Tocopherol, Dehydroacetic Acid, Ceramide NP, Monascus Extract, Water, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Glycerin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Butylene Glycol, Alteromonas Ferment Filtrate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, 1,2-Hexanediol, Ceramide NP, Bacillus Ferment, Ceramide AP, Ceramide EOP

I tried this as an overnight lip mask and also wore it around the house during the day. As an overnight lip treatment it was meh..it just sat on top of my lips and didn’t do much. Using it as a regular lip balm kept my lips protected from the dry weather but it did not do much in terms of actually hydrating them or making my lips soft. It works well under lipstick so I will mostly be using it for that purpose.

I actually like the design of the tube..it is sleek and the shape of the lip balm bullet is also ergonomic.

Nice packaging!

The texture and faint smell of this lip balm reminds me of Nivea lip balm. Nivea lip balm = childhood memories for me! I had tons of them growing up..I had the pink tinted one, some sparkly ones, the plain no nonsense blue one., the yellow one..I had every type of lip balm they released back in the day!! This one reminds me strongly of the Nivea Blue one..the unscented no nonsense one πŸ˜€

Overall, this is not a bad lip balm..just don’t have very high expectations like I did πŸ˜€

Until next time, ciao!!!

Tarina Tarentino Conditioning Lip Sheen in Floriculture

Hello folks!!

In case your curious to know what my favorite lipstick formula is at the moment Β ..this is the post you got to read!! πŸ˜€ Tarina Tarentino is a brand which was available at Sephora a couple of years ago and now they are available online at their website and at Hautelook as far as I know. I purchased this lip sheen on Hautelook a couple of months ago and fell in love with the formula!

Before we discuss how fantastic the formula is, let us take a moment to admire the packaging ;). The lipstick is housed in a gun metal tube with crystals adorning the lid. I had a hard time trying to take a decent photograph of the tube due to the shinny metallic tube reflecting light! The tube has a heavy luxury feel to it and is definitely not made of cheap thin plastic. yay!

The shade I picked up is called Floriculture and it is pretty dark looking in the tube. It looks like a violet based dark red. This was unexpected since online it didn’t look so dark and I was a bit apprehensive about the color when I first got it in the mail. Upon application though, I liked the look of it on my lips! It didn’t look vampy and I could easily wear it to work.

More than the color, what I really loved about the lip sheen is the formula. It feels so comfortable on the lips! It was moisturizing (after all they do call it a conditioning lip sheen!) and it did not dry my lips out throughout the day like some ‘moisturizing’ lip products do. Β It glides on like a balm and leaves a shiny finish on the lips which fades as the day goes by. The color payoff is just right in my opinion, its not too sheer nor is it opaque.

The color can be built to your liking which is great since there are days when I want slightly darker purple based red lips :D! With a single swipe as shown in the picture you get a lovely subdued color on your lips.

The staying power of this lipstick as with most moisturizing formulas, isn’t comparable with their matte lipstick cousins! I can easily get 4 hours of wear with some drinking and very light eating. I don’t mind reapplying this lipstick since I treat it a bit like a lip balm!

The original price for these guys is around 22$Β (from their website) but if you purchase them on hautelook you can get them way cheaper. I think I paid 11$ for this on hautelook though I am not sure since it was a while back.

If I have convinced you to purchase this..then good news! I heard that Tarina Tarentino products are going to be on hautelook today (04/28/2015)!! So head over and try the lip sheen πŸ˜‰ you can thank me later !! πŸ˜€

Until next time…ciao!!!

Popular products that didn’t work for me :(

Hey folks!

Hope your having a great week so far! Every now and then we all get sucked into buying certain things because everyone and their momma are talking about it! So today I will share 3 things I got with a lot of excitement only to be disappointed 😦 boo! I am sure I can come up with a similar list of things again sometime in the future so let this be a sort of part 1 πŸ˜€ Lets start off with something everyone loves..including celebs..I’ m talking about those cutesy looking EOS lip balms!

EOS Lip Balm

yup! these are cute. I like the whole design aspect of the product. But it fails, atleast for me in the function aspect. I don’t find these to be moisturizing for my lips. Maybe I have the driest lips on the planet ..I dunno! If I put this on my lips alone for too long I feel like my lips get drier than they were to begin with! However, these do work well as a sort of base / primer before applying lipstick. So I usually use it as a lip primer these days and not as a chap stick. I am not a big fan of the scent of the one I have either. I think its called fruit punch or summer punch.. not sure. Has anyone else had similar issues with this?

Everyone on youtube loves to use this to contour their cheek area. Now, I have yet to master the art of contouring but I know enough to declare this as a no no for me. It runs a bit too orangish brown on my skintone 😦 If the color works for you I think its a fabulous product for the price tag of 2 to 3$. Recently I learnt that its better to contour with powders which are more taupe/ grey since that is the color of the natural shadows on your face. Any suggestions for a good contour powder (inexpensive one) for someone learning the ropes when it comes to contouring and highlighting?

I was really really hoping this would work out for me. The internet is ablaze with stories of people using this 6$ product in place of the 30$ smashbox primer since they have identical ingredients. I have to say that I was impressed with this! It made my foundation go on like a dream! However, after 2 days of using this my skin didn’t look that great. Something was amiss..it looked dull and I have a feeling it clogged my pores. After a Β couple of clay mask sessions my skin was back to normal but I was too scared to try this out again. I know plenty of people who use this without any issues so I am kinda bummed it didn’t work for me. Β Have you guys tried this? Suggestions for any non silicone based primers is also welcome πŸ™‚

Are there any hyped up products that didn’t work for you?

Until next time..ciao!!

Covergirl lip perfection jumbo gloss balms

Hey everyone!

I know I am late to the lip Β jumbo/chubby sticks party at the drugstore πŸ™‚ I am a fan of the Clinique chubby stick ones which I unfortunately left behind or misplaced when I moved half way across the world last year ! I think a couple of weeks back I discussed the Covergirl lip perfection lipsticks (here) and how when I picked those up I had picked these jumbo gloss balms too. If you’ve read that post on my blog , you’ll know that those lipsticks didn’t win any gold stars from me and unfortunately neither do these 😦

Covergirl lip perfection jumbo gloss balm in mocha twist and plum twist
Covergirl lip perfection jumbo gloss balm in mocha twist (265) and plum twist (260)

The 2 colors I picked up were the mocha twist which is a brownish nude color and plum twist which looks like a dark mauve purple in the tube. The annoying thing is that these color names are not printed onto the product and are listed only in the outer plastic wrapper, so once you open the seal you just have numbers for reference..so mocha twist is shade no.265 and plum twist is shade no.260.

Mocha twist
Mocha twist

Another interesting thing I should mention πŸ™‚ I find the formula for the 2 shades slightly different! I generally like the feel of mocha twist on my lips than plum twist..so…anything good that I write about these jumbo gloss balms are solely based on my experience with mocha twist πŸ™‚ As you can see from the pictures, I’ve used Mocha twist much more than Plum twist!

Plum twist

  • One of the things I like about these is the packaging. It is easy to carry this around in your purse (you will definitely need to, if you plan on using this as your lip product of the day). The packaging is very much like the Clinique chubby sticks, with a twist mechanism at the bottom to push out the product from the top.
  • The mocha twist shade is a neutral nude shade which has just the right amount of shine which I like. You can see from the picture that there are fine shimmer particles in the balm. However, I don’t get the same amount of shine from the plum twist.
  • They are advertised as being lip balms and although they are not very moisturizing, I do find that mocha twist does a fairly good job of not drying out my lips. Its the opposite with plum twist for me! I find plum twist very drying on my lips!
Swatches: Mocha twist on top and Plum twist on the bottom

  • The swatches above are after I’ve swiped these balms 6 times..and yes they still look quite sheer..which is okay since they are advertised as being sheer. But what I don’t like is that the plum twist comes off looking really patchy on the lips with the color settling into fine lines. The patchiness gets worse with each swipe so it comes off looking like a bad lipstick.. a single swipe on the other hand hardly shows up! so in other words I find Plum twist totally useless although its one of the darkest shades in the line ! Mocha twist is a nude shade and that is probably why it doesn’t come off looking patchy.
  • Mocha twist glides on quite effortlessly and as I mentioned before is decent with the moisturizing aspects. With plum twist I find that its a bit more dry in texture and so sometimes it does feel like I am rubbing a crayon across my lips 😦
  • These jumbo balms wear off quite fast, so if like me you don’t like to keep touching up your makeup throughout the day, they are not for you!
  • These are quite pricey (8$) for what you get! They have poor staying power, patchy color payoff, not particularly moisturizing (drying in the case of plum twist) so I don’t see myself picking up anything more from this line 😦

Maybe I got a dud plum twist..I dunno..or maybe I have the worst dry lips in the world πŸ˜€ . Let me know if you’ve tried these and it worked for you!

Until next time, ciao!!
